Two more events for March: film screening and book talk
A book and film event for March, 2024

Here are a couple more related events happening in March that you may be interested in.

The Animal People Documentary

On Wednesday March 20 at 6:30pm there will be a screening of The Animal People documentary, produced in 2019 by Joaquin Phoenix. After the screening, there will be a Q&A with activist Jake Conroy (aka “the Cranky Vegan”), and directors Casey Suchan and Denis Henry Hennelly.

A Conversation with Carol J. Adams, author of the Sexual Politics of Meat

On Tuesday March 26 at 6pm there will be a talk by Carol J. Adams on her book The Sexual Politics of Meat. The event is ticketed but free.

Carol J. Adams is the most important author in the feminist tradition of vegetarianism and animal care. The publication of her first book in 1990, The Sexual Politics of Meat, has pushed the movement for animal advocacy in new directions, and is considered a classic in the field of ecofeminism. Adams explores the interlocked oppressions of non-human animals, women, and racialized subjects from the 800s to our times.

What happens when an animal product, such as meat, is feminized and sexualized for advertisement? Or when women bodies are presented as cuts of meat in the misogynistic imaginary? Why is meat associated with masculinity? And why are women a large majority in the animal movement? What is the relation between farming, white supremacy, and global warming?

In a time of rampant patriarchy and with the number of industrially farmed animals doubling by 2050, The Sexual Politics of Meat is more relevant today than when it was first published. Adams has presented her research at Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Oxford, and other universities. She has a background as an organizer in shelters for battered women and for the homeless, and as a fair housing, rural ministry, and anti-racism activist.

The event is co-sponsored by the Indiana University College of Arts and Humanities Institute, the Departments of French and Italian, English, Gender Studies, and Religious Studies, by the club VegIU and PEAK Animal Sanctuary.
